About the Library

Northeast Normal University Library (NENU Library) founded in 1946 and its formal name was Northeastern University Library. It grew out of the Northeastern University Reference Room, which was located in Jiamusi city. In 1948, the Northeastern University Library was formally founded after the school moving to the Jilin city. In 1949, July, the library moved to Changchun with the university. On 1950, April 1st, it changed its name to Northeast Normal University Library. In October, 1958, it changed its name to Jilin Normal University Library. In 1978, the school was again under the control of Ministry of Education. In 1980, the Library restored its present name.

The Library of NENU( the main part and Jingyue part) is a large-scale library, providing teaching and scientific research with abundant documents and materials. Now, 2,400,000 items are available at NENU Library, including 460,000 ancient books which have 1200 kinds of rare books, 800 odd kinds of Ming edition books, dozens of banned books of Qing Dynasty, nearly hundred kinds of hand-copied books, over 2000 kinds of series, over 5000 kinds of poetries and 2000 kinds of local chronicles. Among the books above, there are some fairly famous ones, such as Zhai Jinsheng's "Collection of Xiuye Tang" printed by mud letters, the refurbished edition of the Song Dynasty's "Wen Xuan" by Yuan's Jiaqu Tang of the Ming Dynasty and "The Eight Banner's Tong Zhi" of the palatial edition. The library also takes in the recently published set of photolithograph ancient books, such as "Wenyuan Ge's Complete Collection in Four Treasuries", "Abstracts of Complete Collection in Four Treasuries", "Collections of Complete Collection in Four Treasuries " and "Da Zang Classic".

Now the library has 400,000 foreign language books, including 120,000 Japanese periodicals. Just after the university was established, it had successively took over part of the books of the Changbai Normal College and Changchun University, including lots of the documents of the northeast area published in Japanese puppet regime which is one of the characteristics of our storage.

More than 1,100,000 Chinese contemporary books are held too, with a systematic collection on many basic subjects such as pedagogics, linguistics, literature, history, mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography, biology, etc. The library holds 10,000 kinds of periodicals and 270,000 binding books, among them the important periodicals in pre-liberation were more and the books and the periodicals of the northeast liberated area were completed.

In recent years, the library subscribes more than 30,000 books of over 10,000 kinds every year, over 3140 kinds of Chinese periodicals and 200 kinds of foreign language periodicals.

In September, 1995, NENU joined the “project 211”. And the library had paid great attention to the development of automatization. When the new library is open, much modern equipment will be installed to provide improved modern services. The electronic reading rooms are convenient for the users to surfing and searching. Many databases were held in the library, such as Sciencedirect Onsite, Expanded Academic ASAP, Chinese science and technology periodical data base, duplicating newspapers and periodical full text data base, China learned journal CD database, and the Chinese periodical educational material database, the academic thesis of the NENU postgraduate database, the collection booklist database, which are compiled by self.

The new library (the main part) covers a floor space of 24,600 square meters with 2,736 seats for the readers.It includesThe first Chinese Social Science Circulation Room , The Second Chinese Social Science Circulation Room, Chinese Science Circulation Room, Western Language Books Circulation Room, Reprinted Rare Books Circulation Room, Special Collection Reading Room, Serials Reading Room, Reference Reading Room, Newspapers and Journal Reading Room, Electronic Reading Room, Audio-visual Hall, Loan desk, Information Desk, etc. In the library, there are 8 departments and an office, including The Administration Office、The operation and professional management division、Acquisition & Cataloging division、the circulation division、Serials division、Reference Service division、Computer Network division、Special Collection division、Technical service division, Media Resources division and the office of Director.

The total building area amounts of Jing Yue library, which has been completed in October, 2002, are 11,000 square meters, with 1,000 seats. There are 3 divisions in JY Library, the circulation division、Media Resources and Technical service division,Reference Service division.

The network and equipment of the new library (main part and JY part) have been greatly improved. The library contains 1735 sockets, providing more than 800 computers for the readers. The speed reaches to 100M and the servers and managing software have been exchanged and reloaded. Readers can get on the Internet freely with their computers. The library is making great contributions to higher education’s resource-sharing and digital library development. ALEPH500 System (Israel) is used in circulation serving. In the second period of “project 211”, the digital automatization is being the important part of theconstruction of campus service system. The library has brought “TRS platform”, which supports the data processing, the data reserving and running, the data resource’s accessing and serving. This platform includes several modules. The integration module can integrate the various data , provide the all-in-one retrieving and referenced links. The construction platform of the full-text data resource is the characteristic self-constructed full-text database. The net information radar module can collect, coordinate, navigate and recycle the net resource. The virtual information module can help build the self unique system (my library )for the individual, including SDI, the resource classifying, the retrieving history.

We have combined the E-books, E-journals and the Databases to all-in-one retrieving system. The high speed scanners and the numeral cameras have brought to help process the resource and constitute the subject database. Now we have NENU reference database, NENU postgraduate thesis database, NENU rare special collection database, documents of northeast China database. They are all the full-text databases. The library will form a integrated data platform and serving system in 4 years and the data will be 15T.
